Red Flag: Three cueing-systems are taught as strategies for decoding in early grades (i.e., directing students to use picture cues, context cues, or attend to the first letter of a word as a cue.)
Word Attack Strategies or "Tips for Tricky Words" are in the back of many ARC books. These strategies are ineffective as the primary method to recognize words.
The IRLA Assessments also included direct guidance for students to use pictures to decode words, in both the yellow and green levels. Image below is of a Green assessment.
